There are a few reasons why semantic technologies aren’t mentioned in the chapter: this was written in 2002, and given that the semantic web is still a vision rather than having any meaningful impact in 2008, it probably wasn’t the right thing to cover then. In fact, I still believe it will be 5-10 years before these have a significant impact. I would argue that XML is the foundation of not just the semantic web, but a lot else that has happened over the last five years and will do beyond. Since Living Networks was written for a non-technical executive audience, explaining those fundamentals was probably the most important. That said, were I to re-write this chapter today, I would certainly describe the potential of the semantic web – it is absolutely a compelling vision, just one that I think will still take some time to come.

Just curious why no mention of Semantic technology at all? Seems to fit in with standards, and open data, which semantic technologyies and languages are both driving and supporting.
